Theres something magic and beautiful about the bokeh effect on photography. I personally love it. Gives the photograph a special halo of softness, mystery…the blurry lights almost look like fairy dust dont they?

I´m always trying to improve my bokeh. The word bokeh comes from a japanese word that means “out of focus” or thats what i read. Its defined  as “the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light”.

It´s as “simple” as focusing something very close to the lens and then leave whats behind blurry and if theres a good light source in the “blurry background”.

I  have found via freckled face, some great tips, tutorials and photoshop brushes to achieve this wonderful effect, here are the links I wanted to share with you today. Tell me, do you love bokeh too?

Picnik ( photo editing online program) bokeh effect

Hay algo mágico en el efecto bokeh de la fotografía. Bokeh viene de una palabra japonesa que significa “desenfocado”.  A mí personalmente me encanta! le da a la foto un halo de suavidad, misterio..casi como si fuese polvo de hadas.No os lo parece?

Siempre intento mejorar mi  bokeh en mi fotografía. Yo lo he “conseguido” ( entre comillas porque aun sigo practicando y aprendiendo), enfocando algo muy de cerca, levantando la cámara luego y dejar el fondo borroso.

He encontrado via Freckled face, tips, tutoriales y pinceles de photoshop para poder conseguir mejor el efecto bokeh. a sea de forma manual o con el ordenador ( yo prefiero la manual),decidme, a vosotros también os encanta el bokeh?

De momento estos sitios están en inglés, hay algunos que se entiende porque se ven las imágenes muy claras, pero no os preocupéis que buscaré también en español para compartiroslo.

I love to carve stamps! is one of my favorite crafts. I love the endless posibilities it offers and the wonderful results I get. A single stamp can be used for so many things, and I keep discovering more and more uses..Its wonderful to customize your things and really make them unique.

Thank you for encouraging to put together this tutorial. It was a new creative challenge for me and I had fun doing it, so I´m happy to share it now with you!

To hand carve your own stamps you will need

List of materials:

1.- Carving tools you can find online here.

2.-Erasers. I have found this brand works really well for me.

3.-A pencil nº 2

4. A sheet of white paper

5.- An exacto knife to trim the excess around your stamp design.

6.- Inkpad

Step by step instructions

1 and 2- Trace the size of your eraser on paper, so you know how big your drawing can be.

3. Draw on the paper something you like. I drew a fish inspired by chinese fish lanterns.

4 and 5 .- Place the drawing  on top of your eraser upside down.

6. Press with a pencil the drawing on the eraser to transfer your drawing. Of course you could also draw directly on the eraser!

7 and 8. Lift and if the drawing came out too light , draw over the pencil marks, so you can see them clearly.

9,10, 11 .- With the carving tool, very carefully start carving the eraser. Be gentle with the linoleum cutter but hold it firmly. Start on the outside lines and leave the inside and details for last. Try different hand pressures, you´ll learn with time which one works best.

12.- When the stamp is carved, stamp it on ink.check if you need to make any corrections.

13.- Your stamp is ready!

Carvar sellos a mano es uno de mis pasatiempos favoritos. Me encanta todas las posibilidades que ofrece y los resultados maravillosos que se pueden conseguir. Un único sello puede utilizarse para tantas cosas..y sigo descubriendo más usos con el tiempo. Es maravilloso poderse customizar las cosas y volverlas únicas.

Gracias a los que me animasteis a hacer este tutorial. Es un reto creativo para mi y me divierto mucho. Me alegra poder compartirlo con vosotr@s.

Para hacer vuestros sellos, necesitáis:

Lista de materiales:

1.-Las gubias son una especie de cuchillas especiales para carvar en diferentes tipos de material. Las hay para carvar madera por ejemplo, o en este caso linóleo. Éstas últimas serán las que utilicemos. Se pueden adquirir en tiendas de manualidades, bricolage y bellas artes o también por intenet aquí.Hay que tener mucho cuidado con las cuchillas porque cortan( os lo dice la voz de la experiencia ) Tened cuidado de sujetar bien el mango para que no se resbale y os corte.

2.-Gomas de borrar Existen maravillosos bloques especiales para carvar tus propios sellos. En España no conozco ningún distribuidor o tienda que las venda así es que utilizo gomas de borrar de este tipo para hacer mis sellos. Las marcas que  me han dado mejores resultados son Pelikan y Staedler .Los que prefiráis los bloques,los podéis comprar por internet,pero el envío sale algo caro.

3.- Lápiz del nº 2

4.-Hoja de papel para dibujar vuestro diseño.

5.- Cutter para cortar el exceso de la goma que no se vaya a utilizar.

6.- Tinta La tinta claro, es para estampar nuestro sello . Podéis conseguir las clásicas tintas azules, negras, rojas , encualquier papelería. Las de colores las podéis conseguir aquí entre otros muchos sitios que hay en internet. No conozco una tienda física donde las vendan,pero seguro que hay.

Instrucciones paso a paso

1 y 2.- A mí me gusta trazar el tamaño de la goma en el papel, así sé de qué tamaño puede ser mi dibujo.

3.- Dentro del trazo de la goma, hago el dibujo que pasaré a sello.

4.5 y 6- Coloco el papel encima de la goma, con el dibujo boca abajo y presiono con el lápiz para transferir el diseño a la goma.

7 y 8.-Si no se ve mucho, volvedlo a trazar encima con el lápiz a mano. También claro está,podéis dibujar encima directamente de la goma. Esto que hago yo es para tener claro el dibujo que voy a hacer y que  quede como lo quiero.Es más fácil trazarlo en un papel,pero como prefiráis.

9,10,11.- Ahora, con vuestra herramienta para carvar, con mucho cuidado de sujetar bien el mango, id carvando, es decir, quitando el exceso de goma alrededor de vuestro diseño. Primero comenzad por las líneas de afuera y pasad luego a las de dentro.La presión que ejercemos sobre la goma es importante ,pero esto se va aprendiendo con la práctica. Si la líne es muy fina, ejerced una presión suave pero firme, sí es más gruesa y no hay riesgo de llevarse un trozo del dibujo,aplicad más presión.

12.- Estampad vuestra goma en tinta y luego sobre el papel, aquí veremos sí necesitamos hacer correcciones.

13.- Vuestro sello está listo!!

Here´s a little  upcycle project I came up with when my ikea lamp fell apart and I certainly didn´t want to throw away the beautiful fabric from the  shade ..I had to do something with it!

So number one: The first thing you need is this..A pretty embroidered lamp shade you cant use anymore. (btw this one below is not the one I used, it´s in pretty good shape)

Éste es un pequeño proyecto de reciclaje que se me ocurrió cuando mi lámpara de Ikea se rompió y no quería tirar la tela con todas esas florecitas bordadas tan bonitas…tenía que hacer algo con ella!

Así es que número uno: lo primero que necesitais es la pantalla de una lámpara bordada como esta -o en realidad cualquier trocito de tela bordado que os guste-.

Number two: cut the little embroidered pieces with a pair of small scissors, leaving a seam allowance.

Número dos: Cortar las piezas bordadas con unas tijeras pequeñitas dejando un pequeño margen para la costura.

Number three: place the embrodered bits on top of a cloth,fabric with pins..and sew! with a very small zigzag all around it.

Número tres: colocar los trocitos de tela bordados la tela que queráis embellecer con alfileres bien sujeta y pasad la máquina de coser alrededor en un zigzag pequeño.

Number 4: there you go… a garland…

Número cuatro: y aquí tenéis una banderilla…

Number 5: and now…hang it  somewhere you like!

Número cinco: y ahora colgarla donde queráis.

I used little cotton fabric triangles to make a garland, but you could also sew it to a pillow, kitchen cloth..a towel..anything you would  like to see embellished in minutes and with a pretty embroidery!

Yo cosí la tela bordada a estos triangulitos de tela de algodón para hacer una banderilla,pero también podeís aplicarlo a una almohada, toalla, paño de cocina, mantel…cualquier cosa que queráis embellecer de manera fácil y rápida!

Theme

A friend just returned  to me some pieces of ceramics I had let her borrow. They are in fact children dishes from Ikea, but I thought they were So pretty when I saw them that I had to buy them. I have been using them for desserts and they are perfect! So I´ll base my theme on them and other things around the kitchen like little colored plastic spoons my kids kept when we bought them and ice cream some weeks ago. See ,normally we would throw them away, but not now that I have  this photograpygatheringthing on my mind.Ha. Ant they worked just fine.

The color palette

Is already given by this yummy dessert plates . A soft pink, pale blue, white… I´ll compliment it with dashes of yellow and fuchsia!

Can you tell Lately I´m kinda hungry?

No, really, even though I ate it afterwards..ehem…I think adding flowers or food makes the pictures more charming.

Specially with flowers,they give life to the pictures “feeling”.

So, here´s what I used; all gathered and placed on top of the wooden board.

Some fabric just for giving bits of color contrast to thebackground and for adding texture.

and  pink tissue paper for the same reasons.

I used these textures with adobe fireworks instead of photoshop. I found it was much easier and fast!

Here take a look at how easy it is..

It didn´t take me more than five minutes to add the textures. Dont´know why but I get more confussed with photoshop. Is it also that easy?

1.- open the photo you want to edit with fireworks

2.-open the photo of the texture you want to use

3.-copy and paste the texture on top of the photo

4.-scale the texture till it covers the whole photo

5.-…yep, just like here..

6.- make the texture transparent to the percentage you like. I left if to the 30 % and it´s ready! just like that!

Like how these colors work together : pink, red, blue and mixing different fonts. For the word “love” something more elegant of romantic and for “ice cream” more “chubby” and fun.

The strawberry popcicle is slighty focused and the back is completely blurry. This softeness is perfect for the subject and the pale pink colors.

well friends, this last part wasn´t that long…more of a reminder of the last three weeks. This is what I know to the present moment and what I can happily share with you.

All it takes now is practice and develope with time”an eye” for knowing what works , or what could work with different effect, textures, depending on the photo, the mood ( so important).

Thank you for joining me on this “tutorial journey”. I have enjoyed very much writing them and I have also learned a lot!! I certainly will be putting together new tutorials in the future.

Tema

Una amiga me acaba de devolver unas piezas de cerámica que le había prestado. Son en realidad platitos para niños de Ikea, pero cuando los vi me parecieron tan bonitos que no lo pude evitar y los compré. Los he estado utilizando para servir postres y son perfectos!   Así es que basaré el tema de hoy en ellos y otras cosas de la cocina como cucharitas de plástico de los helados.  Normalmente las tiramos pero como ahora tengo el síndrome de “guardarcosasparafotografiar” Ja, ja … han funcionado genial!

La paleta de colores

Ya me la dan estos platitos de postre.Rosa pálido, azul, blanco..y lo complementaré con un poco de amarillo y fucsia.

Lo que necesito primero son mis queridas tablas de madera y corcho…

Algunas tazas, dulces y un muffin por supuesto!  ; )

Podéis daros cuenta de que últimamente tengo hambre?

NO, en serio, aunque me lo comí después de sacarle las fotos…Creo que añadir alimentos como galletas, muffins..le da un toque muy agradable y placentero a la foto.Y también las flores , aportan vida a la foto!!!

Así es que ésto es lo que utilicé y lo coloqué encima de la tabla.

Un poco de tela para añadir color al fondo y textura.

Y papel de seda rosa.

Básicamente el efecto de proceso cruzado al 60%

Las texturas que he utilizado tan bonitas son de una fotógrafa muy talentosa llamada Sophie Goldsworhty. Podéis bajar las texturas gratuitamente aquí.

Utilicé las texturas con Fireworks de Adobe. Me resultó mucho más fácil que photoshop y más rápido.

Mirad qué fácil es…

No me llevó más de cinco minutos cada foto. No sé por qué pero con fotoshop me liaba más? o es igual de fácil?

1.- abrid la foto en fireworks

2.-abrid la textura que queréis utilizar.

3.-Copiar y pegar la textura encima de la foto.

4.-ampliadla hasta cubrir toda la foto.

5.-Sí..como aquí..

6.- Volved la textura transparente. Con la herramineta de transparencia situada en la parte de abajo del programa. Yo la dejé al 30 por ciento. Y ya está!

Aquí hay otros ejemplos de os mismos procesos : original, edición pero sin añadir texturas esta vez, sino texto.

Me gusta como estos colores quedan juntos: rosa, rojo y azul y mezclar diferentes fuentes. Para la palabra ” amor” una más romántica y elegante y la de helado una más gordita y simpática.

Los polos de fresa están ligeramente enfocados y el fondo completamente borroso. Esta suavidad es perfecta para el tema de los helados y los colores suaves del rosa.

Bueno amig@s,  ésta última parte no fue tan extensa..más como un recordatorio de lo que hemos visto estas tres semanas. Esto es lo que sé de momento y felizmente comparto.

Ahora falta desarrollar “esa mirada especial” para saber lo que funciona o puede funcionar en cada foto. Esto se hace con tiempo, practica, como todo. Y siempre teniendo en mente la sensación o “feeling” que queréis transmitir en cada foto, de ello dependerán vuestras elecciones de color, efectos, texturas,etc.

Gracias por acompañarme en este viajecito de tutoriales. He disfrutado mucho escribíendolos y también aprendiendo en el proceso. Me encantará hacer más en el futuro!

Hello! Welcome to part three of the photography tutorial!!  In case you missed the previous ones, you can find part one here and part two here .

Today I might get you hungry with this yummy photos of sweets and desserts. I am!!  specially  on the ice cream and the waffle..ehem..but lets start with the tutorial shall we?

Today we will talk about Editing, photoshop´s actions,textures and other effects.

* Effects *

My  favourite free photo editing site is Picnik. I´ve known it for more than a year now and I´m so happy with it. It´s super friendly to use. And even though it has a premium version, the free one is pretty good and has lots of features to use without cost!

Editing always requires checking values of color, contrast, exposure and temperature . Those are the basics. I like to use a warm temperature for my photos .More on the yellow side than the blue. But that´s a personal choice and it will depend on the photo. If the photo has a natural warm color palette where yellow, red, oranges are predominant the warm temperature will be more appropiate. Giving a summery feeling to the pictures. If the color palette has blues, whites, greens, a cooler temperature will work fine for a fresh looking finish. But, this two examples dont have necessary to be like that.The opposite could also work beautifully. Try with both and see wich one you like best. .It depends on what mood you want your photo to have.

On this first example  I used a warm temperature to the 30-40 %  and also added some contrast to the petals and steam so they would be sharper and more defined.

TIP:when shooting this kind of photos of flowers outside your house, mantain the ISO very low.

On these I not only used a warm temperature  but also added some more color saturation and finally the 1960 effect to the 65%..

*Photoshop Actions*

Lately photoshop´s  actions  have been getting very popular as a way to add to your photography a certain mood or feeling. Washed tones, candy lights, vintage inspired.. predetermined effects that make our photos look prettier fast and easy!

If you want to invest some money on photoshop actions, my favourite ones are from Sheye Rosemeyer. Her Eye candy actions are the most beautiful ones!

I´ve mentioned them before and even though I´m still learning how to use them I love the effects!

Here´s an example of them with my kids posing with one of my best friends Juanito. We went to visit him last March. Remember this post?

I used the “zap”, “honeychild”, “pale and interesting” and “buttercup” actions from Sheye.

Michelle Nicole is a young photographer from California. She is only 21! And her work is SO beautiful! She sells photoshop actions on her website.

But she also is a very generous spirit and she has some free actions to download on her blog!

You can also download free actions on Devianart. There are many different styles and you will propably find one that suits best your photography.

Here are some photos I´ve edited  using Michelle Nicole´s actions..

The actions used here are “carnivale”, “antique vintage” and “warm cinnamon” . Mmm, coconut ice cream looks like vanilla now!  (Ok, now i´m very hungry)

*Textures*

Textures are used just like actions : to gain a special mood to your pictures.

Photographer Louisa Rose has shared a very easy to follow tutorial on how to use the textures. I like this one beacause it´s not as complicated as I thought it would be.

Even though I dont use textures for my photos I wanted to mentioned them because they are another tool or effect to make your photos gain a special feeling. Distressed, antique, vintage.. I really like the results, like Louisa´s Rose showened on the tutorial. There are other examples I like here and here.

This is pretty new to me too, but here, let me try the a couple of textures:

*Adding Text*

I always love when people add text to their photos. A love quote, a smart or funny phrase,a description, a poem…They all Emphasize the meaning of the photo.

Try mixing two or three different fonts. It´s visually more attractive and dinamic. But remember to accentuate the text which talks about your subject with a more charming Font.

For example,: I used the photo of the icecream to add some text. I´m talking about ice-cream, so I´ll use a different font that enhances that word.

Use the appropiate fonts considering if the subject of your photo is poetic, funny, serious, melancholic…So the whole result looks consistent.

I also like to add some details to the photo, such as flowers..or any kind of illustration that embellishes it. But in an relaxed way. Not taking away the attention of the main subject.

Here´s another example:

Lets pretend this was the cover of a book…

What I ´ve done here is add a column of  bits of  fabric to the left. With colors that either match the ribbon on the spool or contrast it. They all help each other pop out and armonize the whole picture. I also wrote te word zakka in yellow for the same reason and to emphasize quickly what the book is about.

Well I guess If I had to make the cover of a sewing book this could be a possible option.

The way we present our work  or products  is everything! It´s a visual world and we buy lots of thing just for its presentation, the way it looks … regardless what´s really made of! Sad but true. You have clear examples on beauty products or any other kind.

And a cook book…Fun, fun, fun!

I only used picnik so you could see all the things you can do for improving your photos. ( No I dont get a commision from them- I just like it´s so user friendly and you can get pretty and fast results : P )  I wanted to imagine a book covers, but if you sell patterns you could also do something like this on the cover:

Remember…

Please dont give up if you dont see results imediatley. Sometimes it takes time and practice. Patience is all we need.

There are days when I like what I do and feel happy with the results,but there are also others when I. do. not. At all. But oh well, we all have to learn this important lesson! Treat ourselves kindly, like we would treat our own child when he is learning to read or write. Lovingly, patiently..

Puede que hoy os abra el apetito con estás fotos de dulces y postres. Yo lo tengo! especialmente tengo antojo del gofre con helado..ejem..Comencemos mejor con el tutorial vale?

Hoy hablaremos a rasgos generales de edición fotográfica, acciones de photoshop y otros efectos.

* Efectos *

Mi herramienta favorita y gratuita de edición fotográfica es Picnik. hace un más de un año que la utilizo y estoy muy contenta. Es muy amistosa de utilizar. Y aunque tiene una versión de pago premium, la gratuita está muy completa.

Editar siempre requiere comprobar los valores de color, saturación, exposición y contraste de la foto. Es lo básico. Me gusta utilizar una temperatura de luz cálido en las fotos. Más del lado amarillo que del azúl. Pero es un gusto personal y dependerá también de la foto. Si la foto tiene una tendencia natural en su paleta de color a lo cálido y sus colores predominantes son amarillo, naranja, rojo…le irá bien una luz difusa amarilla. Recordándonos la luz del verano. Si en lapaleta de colores predomina el azul, el verde, el blanco, una temperatura de luz más fría funcionará bien para darle un aire más fresco. Pero estos dos ejemplos no tienen que ser así necesariamente. Lo contrario también podría quedar muy bonito. Intentad con los dos y ved cuál os gusta más. Dependerá de qué tipo de feeling queréis darle a la foto.

En este primer ejemplo utilicé una luz cálida al 30 ó 40 %  y también añadí un poco de contraste a los pétalos y el tallo para que se vieran más definidos.

Tip: cuando saquéis fotos como estas, fuera de casa, mantened el iso muy bajo para que la foto quede nítida.

En éstas no sólo utilicé una temperatura cálida sino que también añadí más saturación de color y finalmente el efecto de picnik de “1960″ al 65%

Realmente me gustan los tonos suaves y como “lavados” de las caramelos de menta…

*Acciones de photoshop*

Últimamente las acciones de photoshop están siendo muy populares como un modo de añadir a la fotografía un estado de ánimo o efecto específico. Tonos lavados, luces de caramelo, inspiración vintage.. Son Efectos predeterminados que hacen que las fotos se vean más bonitas de una forma muy rápida y fácil. Así evitamos tener que estar jugando con la luz, el color ,la exposición. Estos efectos ya vienen hechos.S on como los efectos de picnik para que me entendáis.

Si queréis inventir dinero en acciones de photoshop, mis favoritas son las de Sheye Rosemeyer.Sus Eye candy actions son las más bonitas!

Las he mencionado anteriormente y aunque todavía estoy cogiéndoles el truquillo me encantan los resultados!

También podéis bajar acciones gratuitas en Devianart. Hay muchas y de estilos muy diferentes. Probablemente encontraréis algún estilo que os guste para vuestra  fotografía.

Aquí hay algunos ejemplos de fotos que he editado, utilizando las acciones de Nicole…

Las acciones que utilicé son “carnivale”, “antique vintage”, “warm cinammon”. Mmmm, el helado de coco parece ahora de vainilla! ( ahora si tengo mucha hambre)

*Texturas*

Las texturas se utilizan igual que las acciones: obtener un estado de ánimo especial en las fotos.

La fotógrafa Louisa Rose ha compartido un tutorial muy sencillo de entender en cómo utilizar las texturas. Está en inglés. Sin embargo os dejo un link aquí de otro en español.

Me gusta el tutorial de Louisa porque no es complicado de entender.

Aunque no utilizo texturas en mis fotos, quería mencionarlas porque son otra herramienta o efecto que hacen que las fotos ganen algo especial. Un look  ”gastado”  o antiguo..

Me gusta mucho el resultado de la rosa de Louisa. Pero hay más ejemplos de fotos con texturas  que me gustan aquí y aquí.

Esto es bastante nuevo para mí también, pero lo probaré con un par de texturas:

*Añadiendo texto*

Siempre me ha encantado cuando la gente añade texto a sus fotos. Una cita de amor, una frase ingeniosa o divertida, una descripción, un poema..Todas enfatizan el resultado de la foto y  le aportan mayor valor. Es cuando ” la imagen y el texto se acompañan en armonía”. Incluso llega a parecer que no pueden estar el uno sin el otro.

Intentad mezclar dos o tres fuentes. Es visualmente más atractivo y dinámico. Pero recordad acentuar el texto que habla sobre vuestro objeto o sobre el sentimiento que queréis transmitir.

Por ejemplo: he utilizado la foto del helado y le he puesto texto. Como hablo del helado, utilizaré una fuente distinta que realce esa palabra.

Emplear las fuentes apropiadas es también importante tenerlo en cuenta. Utilizar una fuente divertida si la foto es divertida o una fuente “meláncólica” si es ese el sentimiento de la foto..El resultado tiene que verse consistente.

También me gusta añadir detalles a la foto para embellecerla como ilustraciones de flores,corazones ( esto a gusto personal),pero de una forma relajada. Sin quitar la atención del objeto fotografiado.

Aquí hay otro ejemplo:

Pretendamos que ésta es la portada de un libro..Dice : ” 20 proyectos de costura Zakka”

Lo que he hecho aquí ha sido añadir una columna de trocitos de tela a la izquierda. Con colores que ya sea complementan o contrastan la cinta rosa del carrete de madera de la foto. Así los colores se “ayudan” y resaltan, además de armonizar la composición.

Escribí en amarillo la palabra “zakka” por la misma razón y para enfatizar rápidamente de lo que trata el libro. La fuente creo que le va bien.

Bueno, imagino que si tuviera que hacer la portada de un libro de costura. ésta sería una posible opción.

La manera en que presentamos nuestros productos o trabajo es todo! Vivimos en un mundo visual.Compramos cosas sólo por su envase o la presentación exquisita; muchas veces sin importar de qué está hecho realmente.Triste pero cierto. Es el ejemplo de los productos de belleza, alimentación..etc

Y un libro de cocina..divertido, divertido!

Sólo he utilizado picnik para que pudierais ver todo lo que se puede hacer para mejorar las fotos ( no, no me pagan una comisión por anunciarlos en caso de que os lo preguntéis, sólo me gusta su interfaz amistosa e intuitiva) .

He querido imaginar portadas de libros pero si vendéis por ejemplo patrones de costura podéis hacer algo parecido a esto  para resaltar vuestro producto:

Me está encantando escribir este tutorial. Realmente me gusta todo este mundo de la fotografía y la edición es muy entretenido!

Por favor no os rindais si no véis resultados de inmediato. A veces lleva tiempo y práctica. Paciencia es todo lo que necesitamos.

Hay días en los que me gusta lo quehago y me siento satisfecha con los resultados, pero hay otros sin embargo que no. Para nada! Pero bueno, todos necesitamos aprender esta importante lección. Tratarnos de la misma forma que trataríamos a nuestro hijo cuando empieza a escribir o a leer: Con amor y paciencia.

Part two : Theme, color palette and gathering.

Welcome to the second part of the photography and styling tutorial. In case you missed the first one, you can find it here.

Are you ready! I have a lot of juicy examples for you today, so lets begin!

Step one: Theme

The first thing you need to figure out before starting a photo session is knowing what the subject of it will be. Is it going to be about books? shoes? food?  You can suddenly feel inspire to photograph jewelry, a pretty tin box, candy, flowers a tote..allow your self to be creative. To feel free experimenting.No one is going to judge you. Just have fun and learn!

Ok, so now that you have chosen a subject  we have to create a theme! A special atmosphere in which to set your subject. Instead of taking a picture on the table or the sofa…elaborate a story. A nice enviorment in which to photograph it. Something you can be pleased about. And everywhere you look feels in harmony. Get inspired by different styles. What kind of feeling  would you like to reflect? This is a very important question!  zakka maybe? nostalgic ? country life? retro? consider all of this.

I love this part! I have so much fun inventing and imagining how I can work it out. Here is the example of what I did for the second part of the tutorial:

My theme or subject will be strawberries! They are in season  and are always so gorgeous to photograph!

The feeling I wanted  to show is a country life, something natural,bucolic.

Step two : Choose a color palette.

Normally the color palette is given by the colors of your subject. Green apples, Pink candy, red strawberries.. The second color you could pick could be one that contrasted your object ( yellow-blue, red-green, purple-yellow..) or a complementary one ( green-yellow, red-pink, blue-purple.etc) Below is a chromatic wheel you can always use to get ideas on how to make great color combinations.

I would suggest soft tones for a start. It´s easier to work with pastels. They are delicate and perfect for shooting with natural light.

As for my theme..I want  a color that contrasts my strawberries but in a gently way.  So I ´ve decided my second color will be a pale blue: a kitchen cloth with tiny white and blue squares. will do the trick (Squares! they increase the feeling of country life I´m looking for). And for my third color…white! I always use white for backgrounds . They reflect the light so lovely and make your photos looks fresh and clean.  Now that I have three colors chosen I can add a bit of pink here and there , like the  first photo above or also some yellow with a bunch of flowers on the back just for giving  some color but mantaining a soft background (the 6th photo below)  Start with two or three colors.It will be easier to compose a theme and with time add more.

Step three : Gather your stuff

Please use everything you have at home! you dont need to spend your money in order to create pretty pictures. It´s time to be creative and use your own  ordinary things. Old and new. Even the flowers, dont buy expensive ones( unless you want to of course) but if you want to create constantly new themes and photos and are in a budget, I repeat use what you have at home.Give it a new life! Go to the kitchen,open your drawers and think with your theme and color palette in mind what can be useful, what can work. Look at the objects with “photography eyes”. “See” the whole picture. How will it look like.

Examples: If you have a sewing theme in mind, gather fabric, pins , needles, spools..but thinking -again- is it going to be zakka like, maybe something more modern or classic? The type of fabric ( bold, squares, flowers..), the spools ( plastic, wood, metal), etc  will change depending on this. Remember we are trying to create a special and specific mood and atmosphere.

Here is an example of a sewing theme I created not so long ago. And another one here on a ipod cozy. And finally tea themes here and here.

Returning to our tutorial…Here is what I used for this photo session…

…and strawberries! so yummy! They were actually the only thing I spent 2 € !

Arrange your things in all ways possible and take as many pictures as you can. For the photo above, I placed the ceramic bowl with the strawberries on top of the different pieces of fabric. It provides different color contrasts and makes the photo more fun and “dinamic”. But still mantains the attention on the principal subject: strawberries. The red doily on the back matches the red of the strawberries and helps them “pop out”. The wooden spoon adds a natural, rustic feeling to the shot. Helps us imagine the countryside .Well, at least its what I pretended ; ) Maybe the bowl by itself would feel too empty?

And now time to shoot having in mind the light, remember the first part of the tutorial?

What I do now  is take as many pictures as I can, until I get tired! and…220 photos and 35 minutes later… guess what?… I only ended up usin 10! But this is how it is!

Shoot from all different angles and perspectives,get closer, much closer..step back. Play with your things. Move everything to the right, to the left, on top of something..have fun and play!

Afterwards…You find a couple of pictures you really like!

Note : By the way… be careful when shooting strawberries or you might end up with none to photograph ;  )

The next step after taking the pictures and selecting the ones I like is to edit them in case you want to add more color ,

contrast, exposure or resize them…etc, but we´ll see that next week.

Parte dos: Tema, paleta de colores y reuniendo.

Bienvenidos a la segunda parte de este tutorial. En caso de que os perdierais el primero,lo podeis encontrar aquí.

Estáis listos? Tengo muchas fotos apetitosas para vosotr@s hoy, así es que comencemos!

Paso uno: Tema

Lo primero que necesitas averiguar antes de comenzar una sesión de fotos es saber cuál será el tema del mismo. Tratará sobre libros? zapatos? comida? Podéis sentiros de repente inspirados a fotografiar joyas, una bonita lata de metal, dulces, flores…Permitiros ser creativo! Sentiros libres para experimentar. Nadie va a juzgar si lo habéis hecho bien o mal. Sólo divertiros y aprended!

Bien, entonces, ahora que tenemos el tema elegido,escojamos un escenario! una atmósfera especial en la que situar o ambientar vuestros objetos. En lugar de sacar fotos encima de la mesa o el sofá…elaborad una historia. Algo que os satisfaga. Y que dondequiera que miréis os sintáis en armonía con lo que habéis creado. Inspiraros por todos los estilos diferentes que existen.

Y preguntaros: ¿ Qué tipo de sensación quiero reflejar? Un estilo zakka tal vez? Algo más nostálgico? campestre? retro? Considerad esto.

Me encanta esta parte! Disfruto mucho imaginando cómo puedo hacer qué funcione una ambientación. Ésto es lo que he hecho para la segunda parte del tutorial:

Mi tema serán las fresas! estamos en temporada y siempre son tan bonitas de fotografiar!

El sentimiento o sensación que quiero mostrar es el de una  vida en el campo, natural,  bucólico..

Paso dos: Eligir la paleta de colores

Normalmente la paleta de colores es dado por el color de los objetos a fotografiar. Manzanas verdes, dulces rosas, fresas rojas… Elegid colores que contrasten con el objeto como rojo-azul, amarillo-azul, amarillo-violeta o que lo complementen como rojo-rosa, azul-verde,morado-rojo ..etc Abajo hay un círculo cromático para consultar siempre y conseguir buenas combinaciones de colores.

Sugeriría Empezar con tonos claros. Es más fácil trabajar con pasteles. Son delicados y perfectos para la luz natural.

Quiero un color que contraste con mis fresas pero de una forma armoniosa. Así es que he elegido un azul pálido. Dado por un paño de cocina con cuadritos azules y blancos.  Por cierto..Cuadrados! Incrementan la sensación de vida en el campo que quiero mostrar.

Y mi tercer color..Blanco! Siempre lo utilizo para el fondo. Reflejan la luz tan dulcemente y hacen que las fotos luzcan frescas y limpias. Ahora que tengo mi paleta de color casi lista, añadiré unos toques de rosa quí y allí, como en la primera foto de las telas ; y también algo de amarillo con un puñado de flores que colocaré en el fondo sólo para añadir un poco de color pero manteniendo un fondo suave y difuminado ( la sexta foto hacia abajo) Empezad con dos o tres colores. Dos claros y uno fuerte como en este caso o todos suaves. Es más fácil para empezar a componer una escena.

Paso tres: reunid vuestras cosas

Porfavor utilizad todo lo que tengais en casa! no necesitáis gastaros el dinero para conseguir cosas bonitas que fotografiar. Es hora de ser creativos utilizando lo que ya teneis. Cosas cotidianas. Viejo y nuevo. Incluso las flores, no compréis flores caras ( a menos que querais, claro) pero si si buscais constantemente crear nuevos escenarios y fotos y teneis un presupuesto, repito, utilizad lo que teneis en casa.. Dadle una vida nueva! Id a la cocina, abrir vuestros cajones y armarios y con el tema y la paleta de color en mente, pensad qué puede seros útil, qué puede funcionar. Mirad a esos objetos con “ojos de fotografía” Visualizad la “foto” en vuestra mente. Cómo se verá acabada.

Ejemplos: Si tenéis elegido un tema de costura, reunid telas, alfileres y agujas, carretes de hilo..pensando -de nuevo- si el tema será  zakka , o algo más clásico o quizá moderno?

Entonces el tipo de tela (  de flores, lisa, a cuadros..), los carretes de hilo( plástico, metal, madera), etc, cambiarán dependiendo de esto. Recordad que estamos intentando crear un ambiente y sensación específicos.

Aquí hay un ejemplo de un sencillo escenario de costura que hice no hace mucho y otro de una funda apara el ipod. Para terminar, dos ejemplos de té aquí y aquí.

Y retomando el tutorial…Aquí está lo que utilicé para estas fotos:

Y fresas!..Fueron lo único en lo que me gasté 2 €

Organizad vuestras cosas de todas las formas posibles y tomad tantas fotos como podais. Para la foto de arriba,por ejemplo, coloqué el tazón de fresas encima de diferentes trozos de tela. Confiere diferentes contrastes de color y hace la foto más divertida y “dinámica”. Pero manteninedo la atención en el objeto principal: las fresas.

El ganchillo rojo de atrás combina con el rojo de las fresas y las ayuda a “salir”.

La cuchara de madera añade el toque rústico a la foto. Nos ayuda a imaginar el campo. Bueno, al menos eso he pretendido.; )

Y ahora, a tomar fotos teniendo en cuenta la luz, recordáis la primera parte del tutorial?

Veréis, ahora lo que hago es tomar fotos y fotos y má fotos…Y 35 minutos y 220 fotos después…acabo utilizando sólo 10! Pero así es esto!

Tomar las fotos de todas las perspectivas y ángulos posibles, acercándonos, mucho más, alejándonos..Jugando con las  cosas. Moved todo hacia la derecha, hacia la izquierda, encima de algo..divertiros y jugad!

Después… Podéis conseguir algunas fotos que os gusten mucho!

NOTA: cuidado cuando saquéis fotos de fresas o podríais quedaros sin ninguna!

El siguiente paso después de tomar las fotos y seleccionar las que me gustan es editarlas. Añadir más color, contraste, luz, pero esto lo veremos la próxima semana.

Yay! tutorial Day! I´ve been preparing this for a long time. Trying to write something understandable and nice. I´m so happy to share it with you!!( Please forgive any misspelt words). Thank you for joining me and I hope you like it! : )

Introduction

I´m not a professional photographer, but I do love photography and try to learn as much as I can every day. Paying attention to what works and what doesn´t. Taking lots and lots of pictures and practice. Styling photos is something I´ve always liked from magazines and has caught my attention. I like to observe and learn how things are arranged and why. This post, more than a tutorial is just my way of sharing what I have learned and works for me.Please note that technical aspects of the camera will have a link to a more explicit reference website.

So, having this said, lets start shall we?

Part one: Natural light

I like to shoot with natural light. One: because I dont have a photography study , two: because I dont have professional equipment; and three and most important of all, because I love it! : D

Having natural light is everything. Is the key for shooting gorgeous pictures. If I was asked what made my photography better I would honestly answer: NATURAL  LIGHT!  It really made the difference! But you have to learn what kind of natural light works best.

I once read something I loved:  ” Light must be silky and smooth  like room temperature butter” . Isn´t this great and so descriptive? This is exactly what light has to look like! Soft, smooth, silky. Like when you get under white blankets and outside is sunny.Remember that feeling? remember that type of light?

The not so good thing about natural light is that you dont always  have it available ; ) You have to wait at certain hours..And if its cloudy you might just put the camera away!

If I´m shooting inside my house I know I´ll have great light between 11 and 3 .  Also find that room in your house where you have more light. As for me, I always shoot my pictures in the living room.

Note: even though this is obvious..

-Avoid direct sunlight.Is too bright. You can get close to the windows but without being under the sun.

I always use my camera in the manual feature. Play with your  iso button to let more light into your  photos. I normally have it at home between 400 and 600.But of course it will depend on the amount of light and even the object.  Also the aperture of the lens its very important. I have it at home in 2. You have to get familiar with your camera. Take all the photos you can changing the iso and the aperture until you find one that works for you. Here are some examples …it takes a while to find “the perfect light” that works best…

The second thing that made “the trick” for me was using a white salvadged wood for the background and a cork board I painted my self.

Here they are, this is my little “secret” ; )

The light reflects the woodboard and then bounces to the objects. I´ve been using this for eight months now and I´m pretty happy with the results.

I like the fact that the board is from wood. A white cardboard could do the trick, but wood adds a rustic , natural feeling and texture to the photos and I LOVE this!!

The painted cork is for the back. Here´s an example from a previous post. But you could paint it any color or use cardboard, scrapbook paper, fabric.They will add different moods depending on the color or texture. Experiment. With all of them. Until you find your favourites! Also pay attention to color contrasts. If you are taking a picture of a red apple, a turquoise background would be a perfect match. Or yellow and turquoise…these are just a few examples ,but there are so many. find inspiration in sites like flickr,or nature, or the ordinary things we see everyday.All the Inspiration you need  is out there!

Tutorial de fotografía  Primera parte

Introducción:

No soy una fotógrafa profesional pero  me encanta la fotografía y siempre intento aprender más cada día. Prestando atención a lo que funciona y a lo que no. Tomando muchas, muchísimas fotos y practicando. El estilismo de las fotos es algo que siempre me ha gustado de las revistas desde que era muy pequeña. Me gusta observar cómo están dispuestas las cosas y por qué. Este post, más que un tutorial- repito que no soy fotógrafa profesional- es más bien mi manera de compartir con vosotr@s las cosas que he aprendido y que funcionan  para mí. Es bastante casero ,pero espero que os guste y que os sirva de ayuda. Esto es lo más importante.

Porfavor tened en cuenta que los aspectos técnicos de la cámara llevarán un link a un sitio de referencia más explicito.

Dividiré este tutorial en varias partes: (posteadas cada Jueves  )

Parte uno: Luz natural

Me gusta sacar fotos con luz natural.Primero porque no tengo un estudio fotográfico ; ); segundo porque no dispongo de equipamiento profesional específico y tercero y lo más importante de todos: porque me encanta! : D

Tener luz natural es todo para mí. Es la clave para sacar fotos preciosas. Pero hay que aprender qué tipo de luz es la que mejor funciona.

Una vez leía algo que me encantó:  ” La luz debe ser sedosa y suave, como mantequilla a temperatura ambiente”. ¿No es genial y super descriptivo? Así es exáctamente como de ser la luz! Como cuando uno se mete bajo las sábanas blancas y fuera hay mucha luz. Recuerdas esa sensación ? recuerdas esa luz?

El contra de la luz natural es que  no siempre tienes la que buscas disponible. Tienes que esperar a ciertas horas del día…

Si saco fotos dentro de casa, sé que tendré buena luz entre las 11 y las 3. Buscad la habitación de vuestra casa con mejor iluminación. Y aunque esto es más que obvio, evitad la luz directa. Es demasiado brillante.  Alejaros de la luz directa,pero cerca de ella.

Siempre utilizo mi cámara en el modo manual. Tengo el iso en 400 o 600 dentro de casa y la apertura en 2. Pero claro, esto variará según la luz e incluso el objeto. Los rojos por ejemplo requieren menos luz, es más difícil conseguir un tono correcto. Tenéis que familiarizaros con la cámara. Sacar tantas fotos como podáis e ir cambiando el iso y la apertura hasta que deis con una que os guste, que funcione para vosotros.

Aquí hay algunos ejemplos..hasta que encuentro mi luz perfecta puedo sacar muchas fotos:

Lo segundo que funcionó para mí fue utilizar un tablón de madera que encontré hace tiempo. Lo pinté de blanco y me sirve de soporte.

También un tablón de corcho que utilizo para el fondo. Este es mi pequeño “secreto”.

La luz rebota en el tablón por ser blanco y se refleja en los objetos. He utilizado esto durante ocho meses y estoy bastante contenta con los resultados.

Me gusta el hecho de que el tablón es de madera. Podría utilizar una cartulina pero la madera añade  una textura rústica y natural a las fotos que me ENCANTA!

El corcho, como dije, es para el fondo de atrás. Aquí hay un ejemplo de un post anterior. El mio es blanco pero podeis pintar el vuestro de cualquier color o tener varios! Utilizad cartulinas de colores, papels , telas. Añadirán diferentes estados de “animo”  a vuestras fotos dependiendo del color. Experimentad. Con todas.Hasta que encontréis vuestras favoritas! Tened también en cuenta los contrastes de color. Si por ejemplo fotografiais algo rojo, un fondo turquesa quedará muy bien o turquesa y amarillo, turquesa y rosa ..son otras combinaciones pero hay muchas. Es cuestión de fijarse por ejemplo en sitios como  flickr, en la propia naturaleza, en las cosas que vemos a diario..la inspiración está allí fuera!

A single flower in a jar can bring so much beauty into a home! This was one of those moments I didn´t intend to use the camera. I was just placing the flower in the jar with water and I thought it was so pretty I had to get the camera! As soon as I had the appropiate sunlight. Light is what makes the difference. You have to wait for that special light when shooting …that will do the “magic” . I dont use photoshop for this pics, only when I´m in search of a special mood,; The photos of my holidays are an example of this . The rest of the photos are taken in natural light and uploaded to the blog after resizing them.

I was thinking of writing a tutorial on how to take better styled photos. well It´s actually something I´ve been working on since last year ,but to be real honest, since the BYW e-course I took had some photography and styling classes I want to play fair. So I will write only of what I know and have learned on my own. One or two things will sound alike but it will just be a coincidence. I respect too much Holly and Leslie´s work . Besides that, I think it´s really exciting to share this with you and I hope you like it and find it useful. So coming soon..the tutorial on how to take prettier pictures and  how to style them. I plan to divide it in several parts. So Expect the first one next week!

Una sola flor en un bote de mermelada puede aportar tanta belleza a la casa! Éste fue uno de esos momentos en los que no pretendía utilizar la cámara. Sólo colocaba la flor en el frasco con agua y pensé que se veía tan bonita y a la vez era algo tan simple.Tuve que ir a por mi cámara…En cuanto tuve la luz apropiada. Tienes que esperar a esa luz especial si es que te gusta sacar fotos al natural y no tienes focos especiales o un estudio fotográfico. A mí en lo personal la luz natural es la que más me gusta y creo que es la que obra la verdadera” magia”

No suelo utilizar photoshop para la mayoría de las fotos. Sólo cuando quiero aportarle a la foto un estado de ánimo especial, como en las fotos de mis vacaciones.El resto de las fotos por lo general las subo al blog después de hacerlas más pequeñas.

Estaba pensando en escribir un pequeño tutorial de cómo sacar mejores fotos y más estéticas. En realidad es algo que he querido hacer desde el año pasado,pero siendo completamente honesta, como el curso de BYW que tomé se dió un poco de fotografía y estilismo, quiero jugar limpio; así es que escribiré sólo de que he aprendido por mí misma.Algunas cosas serán parecidas, pero será sólo coincidencia. Respeto mucho el trabajo de Holly y de Leslie. Además de eso, creo que será divertido y sobretodo espero que lo encontréis útil y que os sirva.Así es que pronto…el tutorial sobre cómo sacar mejores fotos. Planeo dividirlo en varias partes.Así que esperad la primera para la próxima semana!

Este tutorail se me ocurrió cuando el cristal del marco se rompió. Me daba pena tirarlo porque el marco en sí estaba en perfecto estado. Así es que se me ocurrió envolverlo con tela para convertirlo en una especie de panel el que “colgar” -y nunca mejor dicho- notitas o fotos. Es muy fácil hacerlo.

Materiales:

Un marco con el panel de la parte de atrás

Fieltro – la cantidad suficiente para cubrir el panel

Tela – La cantidad suficiente para cubrir el panel

Cuerda o hilo

Pinzas para la ropa pequeñitas de las que suelen vender en papelerías

Proceso:

En las imágenes se aprecia muy claramente los pasos a seguir..

1.-  Envolver el panel primer con el fieltro y después con la tela

2. – Dar varias vueltas con el hilo alrededor del panel forrado a la vez que apretamos la tela para que no se mueva.

3.- Colocar el marco encajándolo bien

4.- Poner las pincitas a vuestro gusto

5.-  Colgado de una pared o apoyado en un escritorio, la cocina, el recibidor… es perfetco para colgar cualquier nota o foto.

I came up with this tutorial  when one day the glass of my frame broke into pieces. I didn´t want to throw the wooden part away because it was still perfect so I decided to cover it up with fabric and have a panel in which to hang things such as notes,or pictures. It is really easy to make.

Process:

For the step by step instructions you can follow the images:

1.- Wrap up your panel with the felt first and then with the fabric of your choice.

2.-Tight it up wiht the string around the panel several times. It will also work as a clothline.

3.-Put the frame back on

5.- Hanged on  a wall, the kitchen ,or on top of a desk it´s perfect for hanging notes,pictures, anything you want. Enjoy!

Como últimamente me he hecho fan ( o mejor dicho fanática ) de Etsy, me he dado cuenta de la importancia que tiene una foto a la hora de vender. Es decisivo. Si ya se ve en las revistas.Venden gracias a la imagen, a la fotografía. Junto a mis humildes ( de verdad) conocimientos y lo que he estado leyendo… tutoriales y blogs expertos en este tema para aprender a sacarle mejor partido a las fotos que sacamos de nuestros productos, he escrito este mini tutorial.Espero que os sea útil!

Cuántas tiendas en Etsy o blogs vemos cuyos trabajos o artesanías son preciosos pero la fotografía deja mucho que desear y el producto no luce. Lo primero que debemos hacer es jugar con nuestra imaginación y creativad y montar los escenarios más apropiados en cuanto a colores y elementos que acompañen al producto se refeiere.

Aquí hay algunos ejemplos de lo que digo…

Esta imagen pertenece a  Petite House .Ella vende casitas de cerámica para adornar. Vemos cómo ha colocado cada casita con una distribución como si fuera un pequeño poblado. Y ha añadido elementos como los arbolitos o el musgo que refuerzan esa idea. Para terminar de crear ese ambiente se ha ayudado del papel estampado  para el fondo y la cartulina verde para el suelo.

En esta imagen, nanaCompany utiliza un escenario como el de una cocina para vender sus broches de fieltro que parecen galletas. Es una idea ingeniosa. Ha colocado los broches o “galletas” en un plato y de nuevo el papel estampado ( nuestro gran amigo) para ponerlo de mantel. Por último los elementos que refuerzan la idea o concepto : Los huevos, el azucar y el rodillo, todo en colores suaves ( a excepción del rodillo que otorga un poco más de vida a la foto) que combinan perfectamente entre sí.

Estas muñecas  son tan bonitas y coloridas que difícilmente pueden quedar mal en una foto. Pero la manera en que los colores de cada una se acompañan las realza mucho más. La tela del fondo (papel,tela..imprescindibles) da el toque final, ya que el diseño y el color que tiene, armoniza el conjunto.

no hace falta ser grandes expertos en color. basta recordar dos cosas:

1.utilizar elementos del mismo tono o color del producto para crear una composición armoniosa. verde-amarillo, naranja-marrón, azul-morado..Teniendo en cuanta que deben acompañar y sólo acompañar o en otra palabras “adornar” la foto. No deben ser cosas que le quiten el protagonismo a lo que vendemos.

2.Utilizar colores contrarios como azul-rojo, amarillo-azul…cuidando la intensidad del color, ahí reside el secreto.

Si tenéis tiempo podéis sacar ideas en los mosaicos que hacen de colores en Flickr o visitar el Treasury de Etsy para inspiraros.

si aun así la combinación de colores no se os da bien, tenéis Kuler,una buena herramienta para el color.

Otra cosa importante a tener en cuenta es el retoque de la foto, una vez tomada. Mejorar el color o la luminosidad o recortar los bordes para que quede mejor. Incluso un marco luce mucho. Photoshop es un poco complicado y queremos algo que sea rápido e intuitivo, por eso tenemos Picnik! Un programa gratuito en su versión básica muy fácil de utilizar y con herramientas que van a dar a nuestras fotos un toque final fantástico.

Y claro, una buena cámara que saque buenas fotos.HOy en día no hace falta gastarse mucho dinero en una que nos de una buena resolución y calidad de imagen. Es algo que merece la penea invertir.
