There are times when all I want to do is sew, or knitt,or paint…It has been a while since I carved a stamp!

So its all I´ve been doing since two weekes ago! I believe I have made at least a dozen of new stamps!

Me he dado cuenta de que hace mucho tiempo que no os enseño sellos de los que he carvado nuevos!

Como ya he dicho en otras ocasiones, voy alternando disciplinas ; )

Hay temporadas en que no dejo de coser, otras de tejer, otras de pintar …. y llevaba ya un tiempo sin carvar!

Pero desde hace un par de semanas que me entró el mono y  he carvado al menos una docena de sellos nuevos! : )

You know, in every stamp carving workshop I teach, we all agree on one thing: Carving is relaxing and meditative!

Is another handcarved stamp I made inspired my animal characters from my kids story books…but with some modifications.

Es otro sello que carvé inspirado en animalitos de los cuentos de mis hijos,pero con algunas modificaciones.

I used it specially to create a card for my dear friend Pepi : )

The carving block doesn´t look very..hmmmm nice? kind of messy in fact with all those mixed colors..but it does look great once its stamped : )

Also I wanted to thank you once again for the enthusiastic response to my first workshop in Madrid!! It´s almost full!

It´s going to be such an amazing day! Carving stamps is one part of the workshop, but I have also planned many more fun crafts using stamps and create lovely things  and hopefully have a blast! : )

Sorry I missed yesterdays post! I was kind of blocked and so I just let it be.. But I missed talking to you and wishing you a lovely start of your week!!

I´m back now and with lots of things to show you! my computer doesn´t read my camera´s card, I have to download the photos to my sisters laptop an then to mine..SO I waited to have lots and lots of photos taken to do it just once! And if you blog, you´ll also know that lots of photos translates in lots of posts! ; )

So lets start!

During my weekend I  spent some time writting letters to some of my friends from Spain.

I gathered some craft supplies and had fun coming up with sweet stationery ♥

Siento no haber escrito ayer..fue un día un poco de bloqueo, así es que lo dejé estar..pero os eché de menos!! Siempre me gusta comenzar la semana saludándoos y deseandoos un buen comienzo!: )

Pero ya estoy de vuelta!  además con bastante que enseñaros! mi  ordenador no lee la tarjetade mi cámara  y es un rollo tener que pasar primero las fotos al pc de mi hermana y luego al mio..así es que esperé tener bastantes para hacerlo de una vez ! Si escribís blogs, sabréis que muchas fotos significan muchos posts  ; )

Así es que comencemos!

Durante este fin de semana reuní algunas cosillas de manualidades para escribir unas cartas para una amiga ♥

It´s funny how I feel dragged to certain colors from time to time…does this happen to you too?

This week I loved pastels! like this soft purple and pink

Es curioso cómo me voy sintiendo atraída hacia diferentes colores de cuando en cuando…también os pasa ésto?

Esta semana por ejemplo, me encantan los tonos pastel, como este malva y el rosa palo.

I also sent a little present to a dear friend who moved to another house and was feeling a little sad…

También envié un regalito a una amiga que se había mudado de casa y se sentía un poco triste…

I wrapped the present with craft paper and pink bakers twine. Oh and the tags with my hand carved stamps.

Envolví el regalo con papel craft y este hilo rosa de bakers twine. Ah y las etiqueteas con mis sellos carvados a mano.

I never buy stationery paper because I preffer to make my own. It´s more fun and personal.

For this one, I used my flower stamps. Some of the first ones I carved! : )

I hope she receives this letter soon and that it makes her a little happy !!! ♥♥♥

Nunca compro papel para escribir cartas porque prefiero decorar el mio . Me parece más divertido y personal.

Today´s post is a going to be about understanding the concept of carving a stamp in positive and negative.

It´s prety simple in fact:

To put it this way

Positive is what you actually do carve . This means the parts of the rubber that wont be in contact with the ink and leave an empty space.

Negative: Is what you dont carve and just leave on the rubber. This will be the parts that will be in contact with the ink and that will show on you paper.

I made a couple of simple designs both carved in positive and negative.

Stamp carving is a combination of both.

It looks obvious but when you make a design you have to think ahead of you and decide which spaces are you going to leave in negative and positive.

Depending on the design it will look better with more carved space or sometimes with less.

And here´s the little cloud in positive

and some raindrops…See…the little raindrop looks better in negative. It will actually look like its full of water

shhh… lets not wake this one up

And another example…with two tiny little fish. Both a combination of carving in positive and negative again.

These were very easy to carve and you can come up with so many ideas on how to stamp them and”play”.

El post de hoy trata de entender el concepto de carvar un sello en positivo y negativo.

Es muy sencillo en realidad:

Dicho muy fácilmente:

Positivo: Es lo que carvas. Esto significa que a la hora de entintar el diseño, las zonas carvadas no se cubrirarán de tinta y  dejarán un espacio vacío en el papel.

Negativo: Es lo que no carvas y dejas en la goma. Serán las partes que sí se entinten y vean en el papel

Una pequeña nube en negativo

Hice un par de diseños sencillos para mostrar claramente esto.

Carvar sellos es una combinación de ambos.

Es algo obvio y lógico, lo sé, pero que a la hora de realizar un diseño , tienes que pensar qué partes dejarás en positivo ( carvarás) y cuales dejarás sin carvar ( negativo).

Dependiendo del diseño, quedará mejor una cosa u otra.

Y aquí está la nube en positivo

Y unas pequeñas gotas de lluvia. La gota de lluvia en negativo queda mejor que en positivo porque parece llenita de agua : )

una combinación de ambas…shhh no hay que despertar a ésta ; )

Otro ejemplo con estos dos pequeños, diminutos pececitos.

Éstos fueron muy fáciles de carvar,pese a su tamaño y se pueden ocurrir tantas ideas de cómo estamparlos y “jugar ” con ellos.

Ok, so lets get started!

Today  is the most important post because i´ll  explain really helpfull tips in the process of carving a stamp.

Do you have everything ready? ( you might want to read the first tutorial if you havent yet so you´ll know all the material you need)

To carve a stamp we will basically need three things:

A linoleum cutter

Carving block

A pencil

and a design or idea that you have already drawn on paper ( or directly to your rubber) and transfered it to the eraser or carving block

Before we start carving lets talk a bit about some things:

Blades

The linoleum cutter has different type of blades

that you will use depending the cute you want.

I use only three of them.

The smallest one  ( 1) for the outline of the stamp and small details and the biggers ones( 2-3)  for carving the excess around my design.

Brands

1.-Depending on which carving tool you use you will need to grab it in a different way to get the best results from it, here are two examples.

A.- Speedball linoleum cutter

B.  Reig Spanish linoleum cutter

The reason I´m explain this is becasue the better you grab your tool ,the best result you will from it,like really straight and smooth lines or precise details while carving

Preassure

The preasure is very important.

You will want to make different types of preassure while carving with your tool depending on which result you want.

The photo below does not only show the type of carving you can do with the blades, but also shows the different type of preassure. If you put in a lot of preassure you will dig your blade deeper and remove a lot of the rubber,this can be helpful with big areas, but if what you want is to carve small lines, the preassure you put in your blade must be very smooth.

Pulse

You want your pulse to be smooth also. Steady, otherwise you will get wriggly lines or unwanted curved bits that will ugly your stamp.

The more you practice of course, the better straight lines you´ll be able to carve.

Angles

On straight lines you want to carve with a straight line as well

when you get to the end, dont turn , its preferrable to lift the blade and start carving the new line from its new origin.

on curves you can smothly follow along the line

With a bigger blade carve the excess around your design and with an x-acto knife trim the rest of the rubber so you will only end up with you stamp

Carve a very tiny line for the eye of the birdie, ink your stamp, correct any mistakes and voila!

Turn the rubber

Turn your rubber with your fingers of your left hand while you carve with the other hand. This is better for making smooth cuts , specially on very small lines like the eyes or the mouth.

Also , If you want to carve eyes, or little smiles, START ALWAYS carving them first! otherwise you wont have enough rubber around it to support the cut and the eyes might just tear apart.

So this are my two stamps!

While putting together this tutorial  I realized I´ve been carving stamps for two years now! this means a lot of rubber bits, wasted rubbers and even some finger cuts : ( but also improvement and being able to carve more “intrincated” designs. If you like to making stamps keep on working, you might not get the best results immediately,but you will with time and practice! thats for sure!

This tutorial might have been long and maybe some things were “difficult”to understand,but everything will make more sense once you start the carving! I wish I had been able toinvite you all home and show you in person, but since this is impossible I hope at least you have enjoyed reading this  : ) I´ll show you more stamps tomorrow

Bienvenidos a la semana de carvado de sellos! ( segunda parte del tutorial uno)

Estoy muy contenta de ser capaz de compartir esto con vosotr@s! espero que lo disfrutéis!♥♥♥

Esto es lo que trataremos esta semana:

Lunes: Consejos y trucos para carvar mejor

Así es que empecemos!

Hoy veremos la parte más práctica  del carvado de sellos,los trucos que  he aprendido en estos años y que me han ayudado a mejorar la técnica.

Tenéis todo lo que necesitáis? Si no lo habéis hecho aún podéis leer el tutorial uno para repasar más detenidamente la lista de materiales empleados o también un post que escribí recientemente y que podéis leer aquí.

Resumiendo necesitamos básicamente tres cosas:

Una herramienta para carvar linóleo

Gomas  o bloques especiales para carvar

y un lápiz para dibujar en la goma nuestro diseño, ya sea directamente o transfiriéndolo con un papel ( ver para esta parte el tutorial uno)

He aquí dos diseños sencillos para mis sellos que he dibujado en papel y transferido a la goma:

Pero…..Antes de empezar a carvar hablemos un poco sobre algunas cosas..

Cuchillas o gubias

El juego para carvar linóleo viene con varias cuchillas 8o gubias) de diferentes tamaños que utilizaremos según queramos hacer cortes pequeños ( cuchilla 1) o más gruesos ( cuchilla 2 y 3). Bueno, en realidad vienen muchas más pero yo sólo utilizo estas tres.

Sujeción

Yo utilizo dos marcas de cortadores de linóleo y me he dado cuenta ( ya que uno de ellos es nuevo) que no se sujetan igual.

He aquí a lo que me refiero:

Marca de cuchillas para carvar linóleo Speedball:

Se sujeta por el mango en la parte de abajo, casi como un lápiz

Juego para carvar linóleo de la marca española Reig:

se “empuña” más que sujeta, haciendo presión con el pulgar

Si menciono esto es porque la manera de sujetar el mango también influirá notablemente a la hora de carvar, de la precisión de las líneas etc

Presión

La presión es muy importante.Ya que  para lograr lineas de diferente grosor la presión y no sólo la cuchilla influyen en ésto.

En la foto de abajo podeís ver distintas muescas en la goma. Si ejercéis poca presión con la cuchilla obtendréis líneas más finas , éstas son aconsejables para la línea del borde o detalles pequeños de los sellos,como ojos, bocas..

Si ejercéis más presión, meteréis más la cuchilla y la muesca será más profunda y amplia. Esto es aconsejable utilizarlo para carvar el espacio que no queremos de nuestro diseño, ya sea de dentro o alrededor.

Pulso

El pulso debemos intentar con el tiempo que sea firme para que las líneas que carvamos sean contínuas y se  vean “limpias”,;de lo contrario,

el trazo parecerá disparejos o  habrá partes de la goma que parecen como “mordidas” y que a la hora de estampar afeará el diseño.

Cortes

Así carvo yo….

Empezando por la imagen superior izquierda, véis como comienzo con el carvado. Busco siempre el ángulo más estrecho para comenzar porque es la mejor manera de poderlo carvar , siempre desde el comienzo de la línea. Luego deslizo la gubia a lo largo hacia abajo y al llegar a la siguiente esquina me paro, levanto la cuchilla y continúo desde la esquina, desde ese nuevo ángulo que se forma. Cuando me topo con la siguiente esquina, levanto la gubia de nuevo y continúo con la nueva línea. Siempre con el pulso firme y una presión suave porque son los bordes.Ya que no haya peligro de “llevarme  trozos” indeseados, con una gubia más grande retiro toda la goma sobrante del centro.

Para las curvas como las de esta ventana no es necesario levantar la gubia, sino seguir la línea con suavidad.

Este es mi sello! Ahora sólo queda hacer una pequeña muesca con la gubia más pequeña para el ojo del pajarito

Entinto el sello y pruebo si tengo que corregir  las veces necesarias hasta obtener el resultado ideal.

Estos dos tips son muy importantes para mi, así es que leed con cuidado:

1.-Para carvar los pequeños ojos de esta florecita el truco  es el siguiente:

mientras que con la mano derecha sujetáis la gubia, con la izquierda vais moviendo o rotando la goma alrededor de la marca del ojo. De esta forma quedará redondo!!

2.-Siempre empiezo en este tipo de sellos carvando primero los pequeños detalles ,como en este caso, los ojos. Es simplemente porque la goma alrededor del ojo a carvar actúa como soporte en el propio carvado. Si carvase primero toda la flor por dentro y dejase para el final los ojos veréis que es muy complicado y las posibilidades de que se rompa el trocito del ojo son muchas, sin contar que no quedaría tan redondito!.

Así es que resumiendo: empezad siempre por los detalles pequeños!

Ahora sí podéis carvar el exceso alrededor de los ojos y la boca y las líneas de fuera; entintar, corregir y listo! tenéis vuestro sellito

No me había dado cuenta hasta que he hecho este segundo tutorial que ya llevo dos años carvando sellos!! miles de virutas, muchas gomas desperdiciadas al principio y algún que otro corte..Pero con la práctica y el tiempo-como todo- también he visto las mejoras y más soltura a la hora de utilizar la gubia. Por eso mi consejo para terminar es que si os gusta hacer sellos no os desaniméis si no sale a la primera, seguid intentándolo y mejoraréis poco a poco. También es aconsejable empezar por diseños sencillos con los que practicar como estos dos de arriba.

uuff! pues creo que ya está todo! ojalá hubiera podido hacer una clase presencial en la que estarías todos invitados!! pero bueno, como no se puede, espero que esta online os haya gustado y servido.

Quizá sea mucha información que suene algo raro al principio,pero que a la hora de poneros a carvar y a hacer los sellos, entenderéis mejor de qué hablo!! : D Así es que a practicad! Nos vemos mañana con más cositas!! : )

I like carving stamps, its a little like meditating and also I like to notice how I make a bit more elaborated stamps.

I´ve been thinking on putting together a second part of the stamp carving tutorial. Well it would be more of a  ”tips” for stamp caring that have been very useful for me .

He pensado sacar una segunda para del tutorial de sellos.Bueno en realidad sería sobre tips para poder carvar mejor los sellos.

I carved it with the idea os using it to make tags for my nature bunnies tote

Lo hice con la idea de  decorar las etiquetas de mis bolsos de conejitos.

Nothing fancy but it did the trick!

Here it is after the carving and testing it with some purple ink in case i needed to correct some details.

Here is the result. I´ve stamped it in a piece of cardboard in different colors, then I cut it and now I have little cards to write notes! : )

y aquí veis el resultado. He estampado una hoja entera en diferentes colores,luego la he recortado y así tengo tarjetitas personalizadas para escribir! : )

I love to carve stamps! is one of my favorite crafts. I love the endless posibilities it offers and the wonderful results I get. A single stamp can be used for so many things, and I keep discovering more and more uses..Its wonderful to customize your things and really make them unique.

Thank you for encouraging to put together this tutorial. It was a new creative challenge for me and I had fun doing it, so I´m happy to share it now with you!

To hand carve your own stamps you will need

List of materials:

1.- Carving tools you can find online here.

2.-Erasers. I have found this brand works really well for me.

3.-A pencil nº 2

4. A sheet of white paper

5.- An exacto knife to trim the excess around your stamp design.

6.- Inkpad

Step by step instructions

1 and 2- Trace the size of your eraser on paper, so you know how big your drawing can be.

3. Draw on the paper something you like. I drew a fish inspired by chinese fish lanterns.

4 and 5 .- Place the drawing  on top of your eraser upside down.

6. Press with a pencil the drawing on the eraser to transfer your drawing. Of course you could also draw directly on the eraser!

7 and 8. Lift and if the drawing came out too light , draw over the pencil marks, so you can see them clearly.

9,10, 11 .- With the carving tool, very carefully start carving the eraser. Be gentle with the linoleum cutter but hold it firmly. Start on the outside lines and leave the inside and details for last. Try different hand pressures, you´ll learn with time which one works best.

12.- When the stamp is carved, stamp it on ink.check if you need to make any corrections.

13.- Your stamp is ready!

Carvar sellos a mano es uno de mis pasatiempos favoritos. Me encanta todas las posibilidades que ofrece y los resultados maravillosos que se pueden conseguir. Un único sello puede utilizarse para tantas cosas..y sigo descubriendo más usos con el tiempo. Es maravilloso poderse customizar las cosas y volverlas únicas.

Gracias a los que me animasteis a hacer este tutorial. Es un reto creativo para mi y me divierto mucho. Me alegra poder compartirlo con vosotr@s.

Para hacer vuestros sellos, necesitáis:

Lista de materiales:

1.-Las gubias son una especie de cuchillas especiales para carvar en diferentes tipos de material. Las hay para carvar madera por ejemplo, o en este caso linóleo. Éstas últimas serán las que utilicemos. Se pueden adquirir en tiendas de manualidades, bricolage y bellas artes o también por intenet aquí.Hay que tener mucho cuidado con las cuchillas porque cortan( os lo dice la voz de la experiencia ) Tened cuidado de sujetar bien el mango para que no se resbale y os corte.

2.-Gomas de borrar Existen maravillosos bloques especiales para carvar tus propios sellos. En España no conozco ningún distribuidor o tienda que las venda así es que utilizo gomas de borrar de este tipo para hacer mis sellos. Las marcas que  me han dado mejores resultados son Pelikan y Staedler .Los que prefiráis los bloques,los podéis comprar por internet,pero el envío sale algo caro.

3.- Lápiz del nº 2

4.-Hoja de papel para dibujar vuestro diseño.

5.- Cutter para cortar el exceso de la goma que no se vaya a utilizar.

6.- Tinta La tinta claro, es para estampar nuestro sello . Podéis conseguir las clásicas tintas azules, negras, rojas , encualquier papelería. Las de colores las podéis conseguir aquí entre otros muchos sitios que hay en internet. No conozco una tienda física donde las vendan,pero seguro que hay.

Instrucciones paso a paso

1 y 2.- A mí me gusta trazar el tamaño de la goma en el papel, así sé de qué tamaño puede ser mi dibujo.

3.- Dentro del trazo de la goma, hago el dibujo que pasaré a sello.

4.5 y 6- Coloco el papel encima de la goma, con el dibujo boca abajo y presiono con el lápiz para transferir el diseño a la goma.

7 y 8.-Si no se ve mucho, volvedlo a trazar encima con el lápiz a mano. También claro está,podéis dibujar encima directamente de la goma. Esto que hago yo es para tener claro el dibujo que voy a hacer y que  quede como lo quiero.Es más fácil trazarlo en un papel,pero como prefiráis.

9,10,11.- Ahora, con vuestra herramienta para carvar, con mucho cuidado de sujetar bien el mango, id carvando, es decir, quitando el exceso de goma alrededor de vuestro diseño. Primero comenzad por las líneas de afuera y pasad luego a las de dentro.La presión que ejercemos sobre la goma es importante ,pero esto se va aprendiendo con la práctica. Si la líne es muy fina, ejerced una presión suave pero firme, sí es más gruesa y no hay riesgo de llevarse un trozo del dibujo,aplicad más presión.

12.- Estampad vuestra goma en tinta y luego sobre el papel, aquí veremos sí necesitamos hacer correcciones.

13.- Vuestro sello está listo!!

Cosas divertidas para hacer con sellos:
